Sorry for asking something so obvious but... Are your web-based phpMyAdmin and HeidiSQL installed on the same computer?

Then, please compare your HeidiSQL session settings to what you have written into the phpMyAdmin configuration. (Host, user, password, port,...)

ansgar, thanks for responding ...

I was able to check phpmyadmin's settings for port ... 3306

... and I have compared the un/pw's.

I could not find phpmyadmin's setting for mysql hostname ...

Is there anything else that I should compare?

- thanks for your time ...

If there is no hostname in pma, then it probably falls back to "localhost" instead. You can try the same, not "127.0.0.1" but "localhost". Should make no difference but better you try out.

"Can't connect" means you cannot even reach the server, or the server is not running. It does not mean that your user or password is wrong.

I have tried both variations for hostname: localhost and 127.0.0.1

I am using XAMPP for my apache/php/mysql setup ... it says that mysql is running ... and plus I use phpmyadmin to connect to my local database ...

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHOO HOOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it was the registry entry I think ....

I uninstalled heidiSQL again, and used CCleaner to locate any remnant registry entries ... it found 1 (I should have written down the name of it);

then I installed heidiSQL again .... however I did install your 9.1.0.4867 ... whereas I had been re-installing my older 8.##### version.

so either the remnant registry key or the 9.#### version made the difference ...

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! happy
