[Feature Request] Shortcut navigation through the panels

Hi,

First of all thank you for all the great work on HeidiSQL, it's an awesome piece of software :-)

Sorry to bother but as the title says I'd have a feature request. I have looked into the help and the options but I couldn't find it. In case I missed it, I apologize in advance.

Using HS everyday the only annoyance for me is that when I need to select something in the left panel I need to use the mouse. If I select it with the mouse then I can navigate it with the keyboard to choose tables etc., but I didn't find a way to go from the editor pane to the tree on the left only with the keyboard. Am I missing something?

So my request is to have a keyboard shortcut which switches the focus from one pane to the other, let's say for example "Shift + Tab", since "Tab" and "Ctrl + Tab" are already in use (maybe that as well, not sure).
Then, and I realize I'm never happy, once in the database tree panel, using Tab you should be able to select Db Filter | Table filter and the tree again, while another shortcut (un)filters the favorites.

With current setup + TyperTask I'm not using the mouse at all for all my daily operations, if I could avoid using it at all, it'd be great. If this is already possible, sorry again for wasting your time.

Thank you!

Ciao,
Massimo.

PS: Not related to this, I just installed HS 8.2, the installer automatically installed the 64bit version without giving any warning nor uninstalling the 32bit version. I noticed it so no problem here, but if someone had links to old versions, those will still open the 32bit executable. Maybe it should be shown during the installation process that you're installing another version which can work in parallel with old one, and give the shortcut the name HeidiSQL64 :-)

As a GUI application, it's very normal to use the mouse. Using the tab key should be possible everywhere, except when you have focused a control which allows tabbing through itself, for example the data grids, or the query editor. I cannot help you here if you request a 100% mouse-less application. Anyway I can't understand why that's important to not have to use the mouse. HeidiSQL is surely not the only application which depends on your mouse.

Hi Ansgar,

First of all thanks for the answer!

I realize that using only the keyboard is not feasible but I try to use it as much as I can, and I mentioned the tab key as an example but every combination would be good to switch focus between panes.
To me it's useful (I wouldn't say "important"), 'cause it makes my workflow faster; of course everyone uses the software according to their purposes, in my case being an analyst I just run some queries and paste the results in Excel to work on them there, and so far HS has been really great with the way it handles all this: I write the query (if it's a query I use often I save it in Typertask, a text expander, so I need to type just few characters), then F9, Ctrl+Shift+C to open the export window, Enter, Alt+Tab, Ctrl+V.
HS is really good at handling keyboard shorctus so I was a bit surprised it didn't allow to switch between panes.

Thanks again, as said, it's really a great piece of software.

Ciao,
Massimo.

Since panes are basically fixed, I think it'd make sense to have keyboard short-cuts to focus them, such as:

Ctrt+Shift+L for left pane
Ctrt+Shift+M for main pain (the one that holds Database,
Table, Data and all Query tags)
Ctrt+Shift+R for current query tabs's right pane

In some distant future where panes are collapsible, they could be enhanced so they focus and display the pane, and then collapse it again if hit once more.

This reminds me of when I asked for keyboard short-cut to switch between result tabs.

Nice and easy idea. Would these shortcuts for panels help out here, Massimo?

Hi!

Yes, definitely, as said I don't care much what the shortcuts are (as long as they are "human"happy), I just would like to move easily between panes :-)

Thanks again!

Ciao,
Massimo.

Hi,

I would just add that I would also love to see shortcuts for navigating between the different areas. Jumping to the database and table filters would also be great.

Thanks for the terrific software!
