Novice user, need help resetting root password

I'm a novice to all this stuff. Long ago I installed HeidiSQL and was using a database with it.

I do not remember my root password, but I'd like to get to that database I had in there. I do not want to lose the database information if possible.

Is there a way I can reset or clear the root password, without losing any database information?

As soon as I launch HeidiSQL, I can see my session (unnamed). And it asks for root password.

I presume you have MySql on your local machine and forgot about it for a long time.

But first, did you make a php script or so to use the database? Most of the time the credentials are stored there in readable form.

If not, there are ways, but for a novice it can be quite a drag.
