Can't Connect from Windows 11

I have installed and set up HeidiSQL countless times over the years on my various PCs in both Windows and under WINE in Linux with very few issues. On a new Windows 11 laptop however, it will not connect when using the exact same settings as always. The error implies that it is refused at the server so is there something between HeidiSQL and Windows 11 where the password is somehow being changed? A different client logs right in from the same PC using the same credentials and, as there are only three things in the configuration (the IP, user and password), I can't make any sense of it. After going back and forth with the hosting company, they keep telling me that I need to contact the developer.

There are practically no technical details in your question. You should at least post the error message you get, and probably the server version and something about your connection setup.

There were no technical details to post. It appears it is being refused at the server and, as HeidiSQL has only three settings that matter for my server (IP, user and password) and the same settings are used on all my PCs, it makes no sense, especially as another client works just fine from the same PC. I am not a newbie by any stretch but I am new to Windows 11 so is there anything in it that might be trying to encrypt or otherwise change the password?

Sorry, I was trying to edit, not repost.

Not that I knew or heard of.

Typical issues are the same as with older Windows versions:

  • Windows Firewall might need a rule for HeidiSQL to connect
  • Password with non-Latin1 characters

No non-latin characters and I tried disabling the firewall. I also tried disabling the anti-virus software but these things were done as a last resort as it does seem to be reaching the server and the port is not blocked on the PC or router as I ran a telnet to it. It's as though it is sending some password or login other than what I entered. Oddly, however, after countless failures I just tried it again and it connected!

You must have changed something, didn't you?

PCHome's profile image PCHome posted 4 months ago Permalink

No, I changed nothing. I simply clicked its icon to see what the exact error message said and it opened. much to my surprise!

On another PC running Linux with WINE, it seems to occasionally not want to connect with the same error but that's on my local database, not the live one. I never found what is causing it but it started all of a sudden a couple months ago and has been that way ever since.

What was the error message?

It seems the issue may be related to Windows 11 settings. First, ensure HeidiSQL is allowed through the Windows Defender Firewall. Also, check the Credential Manager to see if any saved credentials might be overriding your input. Running HeidiSQL as an administrator could help, as well as verifying the correct SSL/TLS settings are configured.
