On the Linux (deb) version, the column headings are gibberish, appearing to be characters on top of one another so entirely useless. They seem to sort themselves on occasionally but the slightest resizing of the columns to see the content messes them up again. How can this be corrected short of making the overall font too small to read as it was out of the box?

That is a known problem with the GTK2 version and dark mode enabled, reported in issue #2135.
Light mode does not show that issue, and the qt5 and qt6 builds do not have it.
I think in issue #2135 you can also find a workaround to get the columns look normal, with the GTK theme.
