As a regular user of HeidiSQL I prefer it being always handy by pinning it to the taskbar. The problem is that in Windows 10 (10240, fully updated), pinning HeidiSQL will add another icon to the taskbar that acts like the the old-school Quick Launch and doesn't reflect the running version of HeidiSQL.
The end result is that you end up with two and the active one doesn't show up with the pinned one.
Although this might be dismissed as a Windows bug that might be fixed later, the bug originally showed up prior to Windows 10's release and has yet to be fixed.
Additionally, only a small handful of other applications have/had this problem. So far, I've found that these include iTunes, MusicBee and Skype. Some have been fixed however, MusicBee 2.5.5690 fixed the issue and Skype was fixed today with 7.8.0.102. As even Microsoft's own application had to be updated to fix the problem, I highly suspect it's on the application developers to fix the issue, unfortunately I've yet to figure out the technical reasons why it happens.
I'll note that if you start searching for this problem, be sure you're looking at Windows 10 specifically as the "tricks" to fix this in Windows 7 are not valid in Windows 10.
You an easily reproduce the problem by running HeidiSQL, right-clicking on the icon on the taskbar, choose Pin this program to taskbar and see what happens.
Thanks!
Duplicated taskbar icon when pinned in Windows 10
No solution in sight yet.
Maybe this.
Windows 10 build 10565 changelog: "Certain apps won’t appear twice anymore when pinned to the taskbar."
Source: http://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2015/10/12/announcing-windows-10-insider-preview-build-10565/
I tried it here tonight both on my own install and a VM. It does seem that 10565 has fixed the problem.
However, for those who don't want to jump onto newer builds just yet, previous I was using compatibility mode for many months without any ill effects (although in my opinion, the newer builds are far superior/less buggy than the current release version).
