Adding the new strings for translation

[expired user #9280]'s profile image [expired user #9280] posted 9 years ago in General Permalink
Hello,

I am the (current) translator to the French language.

Since some versions of HeidiSQL, new strings (SSL cipher, Query timeout, etc)
are not added to the English repository at Transifex to allow translations.

Could you see to add them to improve user's experience with your very good sofware?
Thank you.

Best regards,

Thanks for the hint. Indeed, "SSL cipher" is in the english source .po file, but Transifex seemed to have problems retrieving the source file from Sourceforge - the setting just said "file not found". I just submitted the same url again (which was and is correct). In a few hours Transifex should get it, hopefully.

But there are additional strings which are not even in the source file, like "Query timeout". I'll go and add this, and probably some more I'll find.

I also just changed HeidiSQL on my own box to use the German translation, so I will see such missing translations more quickly.

Ok thanks.

May I add a suggestion also? Initially I had found very few information on how to
setup the locale tree for my language (eg 'locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/'), so perhaps some
basic direction on your web site on how to add a language or a dummy tree example
in the HeidiSQL directory should be added to ease things for potential users?

Anyway thanks again.

Cheers,

You mean for potential HeidiSQL users? There is no need for HeidiSQL users to put language files somewhere, as these are built into heidisql.exe. So I guess you mean a more general help section for other projects?
[expired user #9280]'s profile image [expired user #9280] posted 9 years ago Permalink
You're right of course. In fact I think I forgot that to easily and rapidly test my translations,
I had to create the local tree manually (and I remember distinctly that it was difficult to find this info). I have just misremembered why, oops.

So no need to add anything!

Yes, I can confirm that it's quite complex to set up a language folder tree, plus the files. tx.exe from Transifex helps a bit here. The build process for HeidiSQL makes use of tx.exe to pull .po files, then these are compiled to .mo files using msgfmt.exe, which are again packed into heidisql.exe with assemble.exe. Both latter tools come from the dxgettext project.
[expired user #9280]'s profile image [expired user #9280] posted 9 years ago Permalink
Thank you for providing the behind-the-scene setup and work.

May I ask why the .mo files are all packed in the final .exe instead of being
put in their own directories like many of the software I translate?
(It is not a request to do so, just an information of the motive.)

For simplicity reasons. This way, HeidiSQL users do not have to download some files seperately.

However, you can create the locale folder within your HeidiSQL folder, if you want to override the built in translation for a certain language.
[expired user #9280]'s profile image [expired user #9280] posted 9 years ago Permalink
It's generally a good reason and I agree.

What I have in mind is, if language files were provided all 'exploded' in the 'locale/' folder
instead of hidden in the main HeidiSQL.exe file, it would make no difference for users
(no additional downloads, but perhaps some more space?).

For the (admittedly small) fraction of users (like me) who prefer working with modified
(read better) translations or who provide translations for projects in general, it
is easier to have files directly accessible in a tree.

Anyway it is just my POV as a translator, and in no way a request.

Thank you for your time.

Cheers,

The new strings are arriving, thank you!

Some are still missing, see a fast scan list below.

In the Session Manager:
"Query timeout"
"Connection attempts"
also, in the Advanced tab, the greyed help strings in the 4 SSL fields.

In the Settings window:
"Pop up SQL text over result tabs"
"Default linebreak style"

In the Table Tools window (first tab):
all strings inside the "Operation"'s dropdown
all strings for the "Options"'s checkboxes
the selected object's size metric at the bottom of the window

In the Table Tools window (2nd tab):
all strings except fist one in the dropdown

In the Table Tools window (3rd tab):
all strings in the dropdown

In the Tools menu:
"Flush"

In the Update window:
"View changelog"

Finally, all texts for the donation button are in English.

That's all.

Bye,

I just added most of them in r4994. For details see below.

In the Session Manager:
"Query timeout"
"Connection attempts"
also, in the Advanced tab, the greyed help strings in the 4 SSL fields.

Done.

In the Settings window:
"Pop up SQL text over result tabs"
"Default linebreak style"

Done.

In the Table Tools window (first tab):
all strings inside the "Operation"'s dropdown
all strings for the "Options"'s checkboxes
the selected object's size metric at the bottom of the window

Done, except for the option's checkboxes, which are SQL keywords, so I tend to leave them in english. The "selected objects" label is already translated. Probably you're on an older build?

In the Table Tools window (2nd tab):
all strings except fist one in the dropdown

Done.

In the Table Tools window (3rd tab):
all strings in the dropdown

Done.

In the Tools menu:
"Flush"

Done.

In the Update window:
"View changelog"

Done.

Finally, all texts for the donation button are in English.

Done.

"Show only favorites" in the Tree style options in the database tree context menu
"Search in" in the Search and Find textwindow

Done.

the size units in the database tree

You mean the "KiB" and "MiB" and so on? I think these are international, aren't they?
At least I can't find valid informations e.g. about a german translation of these units.

Very good, thank you.

Done, except for the option's checkboxes, which are SQL keywords, so I tend to leave them in english.

Ok.

The "selected objects" label is already translated. Probably you're on an older build?

Yes/no. It's the metric (the unit) which is not translated (see below why).

You mean the "KiB" and "MiB" and so on? I think these are international, aren't they?
At least I can't find valid informations e.g. about a german translation of these units.

It's because the 'byte' and the "B" strings are the same in English and in German (at least). In French they've been normalized as respectively 'octet' and "o" strings (see https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octet).

So:
"KiB" translates in "Kio"
"MiB" translates in "Mio"
etc. But not really a big deal if you don't translate these.

Hi,

Do you know when the new strings will be pushed to Transifex?
ansgar's profile image ansgar posted 9 years ago Permalink
The strings are already at Transifex, but I guess you meant when they will be pushed into the HeidiSQL builds. Each nightly build retrieves the current translation files directly from Transifex before compiling heidisql.exe. I just need to commit some change to trigger the build process. I have a modification in progress so I think we have the new strings this evening or tomorrow.
[expired user #9280]'s profile image [expired user #9280] posted 9 years ago Permalink
No worries, I just see that someone else has half translated some strings
in the mean time, when I was away.

I will review rapidly the remaining strings above that you have kindly added.

Thanks,

Below are some more strings to translate, I think. Note that many
are recurrent like the color names:

In the Settings window (General tab):
all strings (color names mostly) in the dropdown

In the Settings window (SQL tab):
almost all strings in the Element's listview
all strings (color names mostly) in the Foreground's dropdown
all strings (color names mostly) in the Background's dropdown

In the Settings window (Text format tab):
all strings (color names mostly + system gadgets?) in the 4 dropdowns

In the Settings window (Shortcuts tab):
all strings in the SQL Editor branch

In the Toolbar, the popup help for the Undo button seems not connected to the existing
translated string (seems to be MainForm..ControlBar1..ToolBarStandard..ToolButton14..Hint).

In the Toolbar, the string "current value:" remains in the Delimiter popup help.

Also, when a connection fails in the Session manager,
the error displayed is in English "Can't connect...".
[expired user #9280]'s profile image [expired user #9280] posted 9 years ago Permalink
Last 2 for today:

In the Table Tools window (1rd tab):
- inside the "Operation"'s dropdown, translated string with multiple words is split
one word per line (eg I translate "Checksum" as "Somme de contrôle" which results
in 3 lines; to avoid this I tweaked the translation as "Somme-de-contrôle")
- when analysing/verifying a table, error occurs with "You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near" text
[expired user #9280]'s profile image [expired user #9280] posted 9 years ago Permalink
Real last ones:

When killing a process, the confirmation window is in English.

In the "Export line grid" window:
-"Hostname" in the dropdown (click the arrow) in the Output target box
-some strings in the Output format box (n°1, 2, 3, 8, 9 mostly)
-"NULL value" in the Options box
-"Backspace" in the dropdowns (click the arrow) in the Options box

When selecting a table:
- click on a row in the By default column, there is a "Custom:" string in the popup
[expired user #9280]'s profile image [expired user #9280] posted 9 years ago Permalink
Some others:

In the Sessions manager window:
-when creating a new session/directory, it's named as "Unnamed"

In the Insert files into TEXT/BLOB fields window:
-at the bottom when the window has just opened, "files" is not translated (btw should be singular as there is 0 initially?)
-it's the only HeidiSQL window where the session name appears in the window's title

In the Text editor:
-"characters"
-"... (detected)"

In the Query tab and in the Data tabs:
-right-click menu: all options in the Insert function submenu are in English

In the Integrated SQL help window:
-the title is in English
-perhaps translate the left listview: 18 main strings + 19 strings in Geometry and Functions?

Misc.:
-when trying to edit a non-editable variable, the error is "... is a readonly variable, not editable."
-when trying to launch an EXPLAIN on a process, the error is "No database selected"
-most error dialogs have their title as "Sessionname: sometext", but in French there is always a space just before the ':'. Perhaps write the title as "Sessionname - sometext" or remove the "Sessionname:" string altogether as in other window
