Wrong collation when creating a new database

The default collation is not set with the default one of the server but on the first one in the list. Thank you for the wonderful work you are doing with this program

In that case please look watch out if the pulldown menu contains the servers default collation. The first entry is only selected when the default one is not found.

I checked and collation exists in the menu but it is not selected by default. I use both MySQL 5.6 and 8.0 and the problem occurs in both versions. In the past it worked correctly and only in this version did I notice the problem

Ok, in that case this wrong collation was used the last time you created another database. HeidiSQL remembers your selection and selects this one first. If there was no previously created database, it selects the server collation (or the first one if it does not exist).
