Inline Text Editing in HeidiSQL.

When editing a single line of text data in HeidiSQL, the inline edit mode is automatically activated when pressing the Enter key. However, in this mode, it is not possible to insert line breaks and turn a single line of text into multiple lines. Common shortcut keys such as Shift+Enter and Ctrl+Enter do not work either. Additionally, there is no easy way to open an external editor for editing the text.

Our suggestion is to add a new keyboard shortcut or button that allows users to switch between inline and multi-line editing modes. In multi-line mode, users can insert line breaks using the Enter key, and common shortcut keys such as Shift+Enter and Ctrl+Enter will function as expected. Additionally, it would be helpful to add a new option to open the text in an external editor, allowing users to take advantage of the features of their favorite text editor.

By implementing these changes, HeidiSQL users will have a better experience when working with text data, and it will make the software even more useful and user-friendly.

You can press F2 to activate the popup editor when you're in the inline editor. Also F2 can be used instead of Enter for the first edit activation.

When I am in inline editing mode, pressing F2 does bring up the external editor, but if I press F2 directly, it also enters inline editing, exactly the same as pressing Enter. (in the case of only one line of text)

There are often situations where it is necessary to split a line of text into multiple lines.

My HeidiSQL is the latest version 12.4 .

For now, it is possible to double-click F2 to open popup editor on a single-line text field. Just one click won't work.

Yes, that's what I meant.

The inline editor is used on first F2 when the content does not contain a linebreak. If it does, the popup editor is started instead.
